My Most Used iPhone Apps

0

I love using my iPhone. When my wife got me the original for Christmas back in 2007, it literally changed how i used a mobile phone. I had used smartphones for years as well as PDAs, but while impressed with the technology their ease of use was always problematic.

Then Apple introduced apps and changed my life, especially my digital life. Apps opened a new world of mobile computing I had only dreamed of as a child and an adult.

Today I don’t leave the house for so much as a gallon of milk without my iPhone and often my iPad. The apps on them have become stitched into the fabric of my life more so than any computer I’ve ever used. That simple fact is due primarily to apps. (more…)

My Online Tools – Websites Are Easy

WordPress 3If you are curious as to how I keep up my online presence, then check out this page on my site: My Blogging Tools. I quickly explain my methodology and then list out all of my hardware, websites and software that I use to update not only this site but all of my social networking accounts.

It’s really easy to create your own website. You can use tools like WordPress or SquareSpace that are totally web based; or you can use tools like Rapidweaver for the Mac that allow you to edit your website locally on your Mac and then upload to your personal domain. You don’t even have to have a personal domain. You can use tools like WordPress.com or Blogger.com and have a totally free and very personal web presence that’s easy to maintain.

You don’t need powerful hardware. You can use your personal computer (Mac or PC). You can use your smartphone (Android or iOS). My preference is for Apple products, but you don’t have to go down that road. Getting started is very easy and really quick. All you need is a little imagination and a bit of desire. In less than 30 minutes you too could have your very own website!

If you have any questions, please drop me a line. I would be happy to give you some pointers.

If you have an iPhone, time to do an update…

If you have an iPhone, time to do an update. Google+ just got a “little” better. It’s still not universal (read that “not iPad ready”), it doesn’t support landscape keyboard, and you still can’t start a hangout. That being said you can +1 a photo, updates to Messenger and of course “bug fixes.” I didn’t say it was a major update. You can get it here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google/id447119634?mt=8.

“Steve Jobs” arrives on bookshelves, iPads…

"Steve Jobs" arrives on bookshelves, iPads & Kindles on Monday. Currently it is number one on the Amazon top 100 books, and it's been there for 43 days. Pretty amazing considering it's not yet even been released. From what we are seeing leaked about the book we are going to learn details we never knew. We may confirm beliefs we never could before. Most of all millions of Steve Job's admirers will get one last look at the man who would be king of technology in both the 20th century and the 21st century. Genius like his will be seen again, but probably not in my lifetime, maybe not even in my children's lifetime. I also think that we really won't understand Steve Job's genius for many years to come, or his ability to see into the hearts and minds of consumers.

He didn't achieve world peace, or win a great war. He didn't event a life saving drug or write the great american novel. He did though change the world, and did it a few times over. He didn't do it alone. No person changes the world alone. What he did do was have the vision and the insight. He chose the right people. He made the right decisions most of the time. He was a leader. He may have been an ass to some. He may have been obnoxious to others. There is no denying that he created a company that has had a major impact on the world of technology, then returned to save that very same company and in the process not only impact the world of technology but also the world of entertainment, communication and news.

I for one look forward to reading his biography. I hope, as this review indicates, that it doesn't pull any punches; telling it as it was. You can tell the merit of a man without learning about his strengths his foibles.

‘Steve Jobs’ by Walter Isaacson – Review

Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs is a clear, elegant and concise book of record.

Zite Releases iPad Update – Codename “Sybil”

Zite User ProfilesI love Zite. Let me say this again, I love Zite! I like many others was a little worried when CNN purchased Zite. It appears our fears were unwarranted. Recently a new version of Zite was released that brings a much needed feature to the iPad – user profiles. While these user profiles will only work in Zite, it still means that those families that share an iPad to read the news, no longer have to share the same feeds. They call this update “Sybil.”

Zite’s multiple personalities allows each user to have a different reading experience. If mom enjoys reading arts and entertainment, dad enjoys reading sports and little Johnny is really only interested in all things Apple; Sybil has your covered! Each person can create a user profile and then Zite will remember that individual’s preferences and reading choices.

Don’t know what Zite is? Have you been living under a rock? Zite is a personal news aggregator that learns what you like to read and show you more stories around those topics. Not only that, if you have a preference in what sources that news comes from you have control to see more or less from that content provider. With this release you can even completely nix a provider from your reading experience.  (more…)

10 Year Old Girl’s Apple Dream Comes True

We all have dreams. As children they start small, typically only costing imagination. As we get older those dreams come with a higher price of sacrifice, compromise and often money. The rewards of seeing our dream, no matter how simple or silly, come true makes that which we give up seem less painful.

A 10-year-old girl in Utah taught a store full of Apple Store employees that lesson and in particular the store manager. So much so that the manager broke the rules just for her. In turn they both taught all of us a lesson or two.

According to the Girl’s dad, his story linked below, she had saved her nickles and dimes for nine months so that she could buy her very own iPod Touch. No small feat for a 10-year-old. (more…)
